Key difference between their bands and my bands.īen: This is the band’s song Ha-He. But they were also undeniably good.īen: Yes. Whether or not you get noticed might not have to do with how good you are.Īmory: Well back in 2010, a group called Just A Band got some of that dumb luck. Step two… quit the day job! Support yourself with your art.īen: And while luck favors the hard working, long working musician, in the end, it is often just dumb luck. Catch attention and basically go viral.Īmory: Step one.go viral. Why did we do this though?īen: So I think that what I wanted to talk about was how, effectively you and I and everyone else who writes and plays original music is effectively trying.to do the same thing. What do you think? Is High Pony the pinnacle of my band names?Īmory: I like it. But don’t Google that.īen: Then we broke up and half reformed as Pre War…īen: And finally.the last band I was in in New York City, High Pony. Clearly my Strokes era.īen: Then my band Conversion Party.which I thought was pretty good actually. On to you Ben-jo, tell me about your Bands.īen: OK so my freshman year of high school.the extremely poorly named but nostalgically lovely to me, Artificially Flavored.īen: College I got a smidge better on the naming thing three bands later. But I made an embarrassing demo when I was 11 called “Sink.”Īmory: and then made another demo in high school that had some pretty angsty teen vibes…Īmory: And then I’ve been releasing albums since college that have hopefully helped me kinda settle into the person I am now. I did sing with some friends in elementary school and we’d bang hairbrushes together as our percussion. You want to go first or you want me to?Īmory: I’ve mostly been a solo artist. Time to go on tour together.Īmory: On tour? Green M&Ms? Showering in strange places? Flouching?īen: Well I did just learn what flouching is.īen: I just meant a tour of ALL the bands we’ve PLAYED in. music, sound effects, tone) are harder to translate to text.īen: Amory. We explore American myopia, the peril of memes and artistic expression in Kenya, and how we should think of memes as a powerful form of communication. Mixer, sound designer and music creator: Matt ReedĪdditional production: Josh Crane, Frank Hernandez, Kristin Torres, Sofie Kodner and Rachel Carlson Show producers: Nora Saks, Dean Russell and Quincy Walters Credits:Ĭo-hosts: Ben Brock Johnson and Amory Sivertson Western media told countless stories about the viral music video character known as “Makmende.” They called Makmende “The Kenyan Chuck Norris,” or a sound-alike of his famous line, “Make my day.” But, according to the artists who brought Makmende into being, none of these characterizations are accurate. Enjoy! And have a lovely weekend. We know that there have been meme wars in America, and that Donald Trump has been called the “first president meme’d into office.” But in Kenya-a country where one of the only feasible forms of political expression is memes, and meme creators are being jailed for criticizing the government-it is a very different story. That’s why I just had to end my Clint Eastwood Week with these videos…. Funny how they have that Clint Eastwood link. They’re easily my two favorite Gorillaz songs, though. Of the two below, I’d have to say that I like the Dirty Harry song slightly more but the Clint Eastwood video is better. I love the virtual band’s style and, more importantly, they have damn good songs. I’m not going to say a lot about Gorillaz as I already did that HERE in my review of the Tank Girl comic collection that I read since Tank Girl’s co-creator (Jamie Hewlett) also helped create Gorillaz along with Blur frontman Damon Albarn. Because I love them! Fantastic songs from a band that should have been far bigger.

Instead of forcing myself to finally watch Million Dollar Baby to review today, I’ve decided to just stick with my Music Video Friday series and post these Eastwood tribute songs by the Gorillaz. ? Oh, and I also did a list yesterday of My Top Ten Clint Eastwood Movies HERE. I think I’ve now seen far more Clint Eastwood movies than any girl really should.

Plus I also previously reviewed Unforgiven, Escape From Alcatraz & The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. I spent the week reviewing some Eastwood films that I’ve just watched for the first time this year. Today’s videos are Clint Eastwood & Dirty Harry by Gorillaz to end my Clint Eastwood Week here at Cinema Parrot Disco.
